The Philippine Women Judges Association (PWJA) is deeply saddened by the passing of its beloved founder, Justice Ameurfina A. Melencio-Herrera, who lived a full life at 98 years of age. Justice Herrera organized the PWJA on September 5, 1987 with only 155 women judges, and had overseen its consistent growth over the years. Now, more than a thousand lady magistrates look up to Justice Herrera as a source of inspiration and empowerment. Her academic superiority, manifest integrity, remarkable fortitude, and endless capacity for work even in her twilight years are unparalleled. Truly, a cut above the rest!

Certainly, this profound loss will be felt for a long time not just by every member of the PWJA but by the entire Judiciary. But even with her light dimmed, Justice Herrera’s life and work ideals will continue to illumine the path of jurists, women and men alike, who ceaselessly advocate the rule of law.

Our sincerest condolences to the family members and loved ones Justice Herrera left behind.
